What is it?
Meningococcal disease is a uncommon but potentially life-threatening infection caused by different strains for a bacteria species (Men A, B, C, W, Y and X).
Certain regions of the world, including parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the "meningitis belt," and crowded settings like military barracks or university campuses, have a higher incidence of meningococcal outbreaks. Travelers to these areas are at increased risk of exposure.
Risk areas
The disease is most common in the ‘meningitis belt’ of sub-Saharan Africa, stretching from Senegal through to Ethiopia. Following several large outbreaks of the disease in Saudi Arabia, certification of vaccination (with the quadrivalent vaccine) against Meningitis ACWY is now mandatory for pilgrims.
Prevention
Travellers to areas within the meningitis belt are at increased risk for a number of reasons such as
- Travelers to high-risk regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Asia, and areas where meningococcal outbreaks are common.
- Young adults (especially university students) and those in close living conditions.
- Individuals with certain medical conditions (e.g., spleen issues, compromised immune systems) or those in contact with the bacteria through employment.
Length of protection
Booster dose can be considered after 5 years following primary vaccination.
How is the vaccine given?
The MenB vaccine is typically administered in two or three doses, depending on the specific vaccine used. It is recommended that the vaccine be completed at least two weeks before travel for optimal protection.
